Beyond Digital Badges
Take charge of your story with DOTES
When I first started working with digital badges, it felt like a breakthrough.
We were finally recognizing learning that happened outside the classroom—skills gained at summer internships, in maker labs, on field trips. Badges gave us a way to say, “This counts too.” We were using technology that put learners at the center, turning Washington, D.C., into a giant learning campus.
But over time, I saw the limits. Even in the most innovative systems, badges were still tied to authority. Someone had to issue them. Someone had to approve. The learner was still on the receiving end, waiting to be validated.
I invented DOTES to flip that script. A Dote isn’t a stamp of approval—it’s a story you author yourself. Instead of saying, “Here’s proof I did something,” a Dote says, “Here’s what I experienced, what I noticed, what I learned, and what I’m still exploring.” It’s structured reflection, not external certification.
Dotes aren’t about status; they’re about meaning. They turn lived experience into narrative memory that can be mixed and remixed with AI on your terms.
You are more than a report card or someone else’s stamp of approval. Dotes help you take charge of your story for school, work, and life.
